Jesus is Missional

October 26, 2014 Preacher: Series: The Church is Called to Be...

Scripture: Galatians 3:23–4:7

Key Truth: Jesus is sent on a mission by God to redeem and reconcile His children setting them free to walk in newness of life both now and in eternity.

Introduction:

Q: Did you pursue Jesus for redemption or reconciliation or did he pursue you? How would you pursuing him change the meaning of the story?

Text: Jesus is Missional:

Galatians 3:23-4:7

3:23-28: Jesus Comes to Deliver God’s Children

“When the Law is properly used its value cannot be too highly appraised. It will take me to Christ every time.” - Martin Luther, Galatians

Q: Do you feel free in the law (i.e. rules, regulations, commands)? What does freedom look like for you through faith in Christ?

“The gospel has radical social implications. It means I am a Christian before I am anyone or anything else. It means that all the barriers that separate people in the world into warring factions come down in Christ.” - Timothy Keller, Galatians For You

Q: In what ways do you identify yourself? What identification has the greatest priority? How does that priority affect how you live?

3:29-4:3: Transformed From Slaves to Heirs:

“What an astonishing transition does that soul experience, which is delivered from the terrors of Mount Sinai, and brought into ‘the liberty of the children of God!’ From being harassed with the dread of God’s wrath, and impelled by servile fears to irksome, unsatisfying, ineffectual labours, how delightful to behold the face of a reconciled God and Father, to feel a holy boldness and confidence before him, and to anticipate the joys of heaven!” - Charles Simeon, Horae Homileticae Vol. 17: Galatians-Ephesians

Q: What are some elementary principles of the world to which you have been enslaved? How has your life improved by being set free from them in Christ as an heir to God?

4:4-7: Heirs Who Cry “Abba Father!” in the Spirit:

“The purpose of the Son’s mission was to give the rights of sonship; the purpose of the Spirit’s mission, to give the power of using them.” - H.B. Swete, The Holy Spirit in the New Testament

Q: In what ways is the Holy Spirit empowering you to access and use your rights as a child of Abba?

Application:

Jesus being missional means:

-you have been set free from the law to walk in newness of life by faith

-you have been given a new status and existence as a child and heir of God

-you have been set free from the elementary principles of this world

-you have been given the Holy Spirit and all of his power to access and use your inherited rights and privileges

Q: Does this describe your unfolding life in Christ who pursued you to redeem and reconcile you?

Benediction: 1 John 4:9-10
