Rivers of Living Water: The Filling of the Holy Spirit in Union with Christ

January 27, 2019 Preacher: Series: The Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John

Scripture: John 7:37–52

Key Truth: Jesus will satisfy our thirst with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that will overflow from us for the benefit of others who struggle with His identity and God’s sovereignty.

What makes you feel most alive? Why?

“Our blessed Lord incessantly labored for the salvation of (humanity); nor could their ungrateful returns at all divert him from his purpose. His life was sought, and he knew that persons were sent to apprehend him: yet, instead of rejecting them with abhorrence, he sought to win them by love, and importuned them to accept his richest blessings. Let us consider his invitation….”

Charles Simeon, Horae Homileticae, Vol. 13: Luke XVII to John XII

Out of the Heart Rivers of Living Water:
The Filling of the Holy Spirit:

John 7:37-39

“With the Spirit’s coming, that which Martin Luther called the priesthood of all believers became a reality—every member of the community of faith was endowed by the Holy Spirit, empowered from on high to participate in the ministry of Christ’s kingdom. If you are a Christian, you have received the Holy Spirit. You are an anointed person, fit to be used of God for the furtherance of the kingdom of God.’”

R.C. Sproul, John: St. Andrews Expository Commentary

What helps you tap into the rivers of living water that flow from your heart in the power of the Holy Spirit in union with Christ?
How have others benefited from this water
flowing from you?

Questioning the Identity of the True Christ and Limiting God’s Sovereignty:

John 7:40-52

“But while we value religious knowledge, we must take care that we do not overvalue it. We must not think it enough to know the facts and doctrines of our faith, unless our hearts and lives are thoroughly influenced by what we know. The very devils know the creed intellectually, and ‘believe and tremble,’ but remain devils still. (James ii.19) It is quite possible to be familiar with the letter of Scripture, and to be able to quote texts appropriately, and reason about the theory of Christianity, and yet to remain dead in trespasses and sins. Like many of the generation to which our Lord preached, we may know the Bible well, and yet remain faithless and unconverted. Heart-knowledge , we must remember, is the one thing needful.”

J.C. Ryle, Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, Vol. 3: John 1:1—John 10:30

What causes you to question the identity of the true Christ?
What causes you to seek to
limit God’s sovereignty in who and where He works?

Application:

John 7:37-52 teaches us that Jesus will:
satisfy our thirst with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that will overflow from us
for the benefit of others who struggle with His identity and God’s sovereignty
