God’s Redemptive Justice, Part 2: The Loss of Blessings and Land

July 2, 2017 Preacher: Series: The Prophecy of Hosea: The Story of God's Redemptive Justice & Covenant Love

Scripture: Hosea 9:1–17

Key Truth: God will sometimes remove both physical and spiritual blessings from us in order to draw us back to Him.

Introduction:

Q: What all has God blessed you with?

The Removal of God’s Blessed Provision of Food, Land, and Worship:

Hosea 9:1-9

“So (Hosea) confronts them with the fact that other than maintaining a form of ceremonial worship, they have nothing to recommend themselves to God. Even the fig leaf of piety would be stripped away when famine made continuation of the rituals impossible.”

Duane A. Garrett, The New American Commentary: Hosea, Joel

Q: Have you ever experienced God’s means of grace as a painful means of judgment or discipline? How did you respond?

The Removal of God’s Blessed Provision of Children and Presence:

Hosea 9:10-17

“It is Yahweh’s vital presence that makes possible the cycles of life; for him to withdraw is a sentence of death.”

David Allan Hubbard,
Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries, Vol. 24: Hosea

Q: Do you think generationally? What are you doing to contribute to the emerging generation’s knowledge of God?

Hosea 9:1-17 teaches us that for the purpose of drawing us back to Him God will sometimes remove the blessings of:

-physical provision for sustenance and worship

-a continued lineage and His presence

“There is nothing so essential to our happiness as the Divine presence. With that, we may smile at all earthly trials: without it, not all the universe can satisfy the soul. This is promised to us as the greatest good that can be vouchsafed to us in this world: and the withdrawment of it is threatened as the greatest of all evils.”

Charles Simeon, Horae Homileticae, Vol. 10: Hosea to Malachi
