God's Means of Grace in Worship

February 5, 2017 Preacher: Series: Grace in Unexpected Places

Scripture: Leviticus 9:1–24

Key Truth: God’s means of grace in worship serve to remind us of our forgiveness in Christ alone calling us to dedicate our lives to display the glory of our communion with Him.

Introduction:

Q: What most consistently reminds you of who you are?

God’s Provision of the Sacrificial Means of Grace:

Leviticus 9:1-6

“God provided the ground of your forgiveness in that sacrifice. God’s forgiveness of you, the lesson was, is not based on something in you. It’s not based on something you do. It’s based on something God provides.”

J. Ligon Duncan, “Aaron and His Sons Complete the Ceremonies,”

Q: What is your view of weekly corporate worship? Do you approach it as merely a necessary duty or expectantly as a gift from God to receive His means of grace according to His design?

God’s Accomplishment and Application of Atonement:

Leviticus 9:7-21

“The order of the sacrifices described in the ritual prescriptions constitutes an important guide for Christians with regard to the principles of spirituality underlying divine worship. Of the three concepts enunciated (in the sacrifices), the one that had priority concerned cleansing from sin, denoted by the sin offering. When proper atonement had been made, the worshipper was to surrender his life and labour to God, as indicated by the burnt and cereal (or grain) offerings. Finally, he was to enjoy fellowship with God within the context of a communion meal, which the peace offering furnished.”

R. K. Harrison, Leviticus: An Introduction and Commentary

Q: How is your atonement in Christ affecting the whole of your life? Is it changing your worship and ethics? Are you growing in gratitude?

God’s Blessed and Glorious Presence with His People:

Leviticus 9:22-24

“This text teaches us that the presence of Yahweh is the goal of worship. All the priestly duties, including many sacrifices, find their culmination in God’s appearance among his people. All the different parts of the tabernacle and all the duties performed there are vanity apart from the presence of the God.”

John D. Currid, Leviticus

Q: What is the true goal of worship? Is God’s presence and glory reflected in your life as a result of your worship?

Leviticus 9:1-24 teaches us that:

-God calls His people together weekly to receive the means of grace despite our sin

-atonement transforms our whole life by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone

-the true goal of worship is God’s presence and glory displayed in our lives
